Mid Scotland Work Programme

The Mid Scotland group has a work programme that it develops in partnership industry and range of public agencies.

In 2009/10 it has examined the implications of policy objectives for greater wood energy use and has contributed towards a study of this that will be published shortly.

The Mid Scotland group has 3 priorities going forward:

An objective assessment of the Scottish resource base

There is concern that the productive wood resource is not growing and could even be declining in certain regions. We will examine this issue and highlight any concerns that exist.

How can carbon off-setting and trading contribute to the Forest Industries?

The industry has limited understanding and awareness of the financial opportunities that may arise. We will focus on how carbon trading and off-setting markets could be exploited by the industry to fund a faster rate of productive woodland planting.

Developing the wood heat market in Central Scotland

The development of a diverse wood heat sector offers an attractive and sustainable market for the productive wood resource of Mid Scotland. At the moment this market is not developing. In addition the market is immature - with relatively low awareness and confidence both in the potential users and suppliers. Once the Renewable Heat Incentive is clear we will set out the case for market development and help the industry exploit the commercial opportunities.
