Wood Products Innovation Gateway (WPIG)

The Wood Products Innovation Gateway (WPIG) project officially started on 1st January. It is an initiative which is focused on supporting Scottish SME's to develop a whole range of new added value wood based products, processes and construction systems from Scottish-grown timber. In doing so, we look to raise the value of the forest resource in Scotland.
WPIG is supported with finance and in-kind resources from: European Regional Development Fund, Scottish Enterprise, Forestry Commission Scotland, Confederation of Forest Industries (Confor) and Wood for Good.
Over the 36 months of the project, it is intended to engage with more than 600 Scottish-based SMEs with a view to identifying ideas that can be taken through initial appraisal, full research & development and testing; and on to commercial production. We intend to engage with a minimum of 20 new research networks (e.g. Knowledge Transfer Partnerships) and to target an equivalent number of commercially viable uses for Scottish grown timber.
In recent years, there have been a number of new commercial products that have successfully come to commercial realisation from within the Scottish timber industry. For example, I-joists from James Jones & Sons, timber frame structures from Alexanders Timber Design, plus numerous innovations and product improvements from sawmilling companies; and WPIG aims to increase the number of such successes. One particular product we hope to help bring forward manufactured from home-grown timber is Cross Laminated Timber panels and this is a theme we are already making progress with.
The WPIG website will be developed further over the next few months. For further information on the Wood Product Innovation Gateway and how to become involved, please contact pr.wilson@napier.ac.uk (Director, TheWoodStudio.aspx , FPRI), or Andy Leitch (WPIG Project Manager) a.leitch@napier.ac.uk
