Event aims to attract women into forestry - 13 April 2010

A free event to be hosted at Barony College near Dumfries aims to promote careers in forestry to women from all over Scotland.

Hosted by Forestry Commission Scotland, the country’s largest woodland manager, the event will demonstrate the many varied and challenging careers open to women who are returning to work or planning a career after their studies.

Careers can vary from working in the timber sector to nature conservation, through to recreation management and working with local community groups and schools.

The event is to be held on Monday 26th April at Barony College with registration from 12.15pm.

Heather Melville, from the Commission’s Human Resources team said:

“The face of forestry is changing and more women are finding very rewarding careers working with woodlands. Careers can vary from very physical harvesting jobs to demanding work with communities, children and wildlife.

“Many women come straight into the Commission from school, college, university or when returning to work. Our aim is to simply give some practical advice and support to any women who might be considering a future in forestry.

“The event is free and will be a great opportunity to speak to those already working in the industry and share first-hand experiences into the different types of careers and training available.”

As well as guest speakers, people working within the Commission will be on hand to talk to anyone considering a career in forestry. The event is also being supported in partnership with the Scottish Resource Centre for Women in Science, Engineering and Technology.  Lunch will be provided.

All those wishing to attend should register in advance through www.napier.ac.uk/forestry and  email src@napier.ac.uk for further information.
