Consultation on Increasing the uptake of eco-driving training for LGV and PCV drivers - 26 March 2010

DfT are consulting on Increasing the uptake of eco-driving training for drivers of LGVs and PCVs.

Eco driving training  (such as the SAFED courses) reduces fuel consumption and accidents and is seen as a mechanism to reduce CO2 emissions and to reduce haulier costs.

One of the options is to make such courses a mandatory element within the existing requirements for hauliers to undertake 5 days of CPC training every 5 years.

As you will be aware The Timber Transport Forum developed its own version of eco-driving training tailored to the timber haulier needs and the Forum are working on a business plan on how to deliver this.

One of the issues we are facing is the relatively high cost of delivering one on one, in-cab  training - which is of course more expensive than classroom based training.

At present hauliers may choose to fulfil their training needs with the cheapest available courses.

The consultation document can be found here

If you have views on this please contact Roland Stiven, Timber Transport Forum Project Manager.

Roland will aim to collate views on this and draft a response for consideration by the Forum

The consultation period closes on 30th June 2010.
